Ford to add more than 2,000 jobs in Kansas City

Ford Kansas City

Continued high demand for the Ford F-150, along with the addition of the all-new Transit series of commercial vehicles, has led Ford to announce that it will add over 2,000 jobs at its Kansas City Assembly Plant. At the time of the announcement, the plant boasts 2,450 hourly employees working on two shifts. All told, Ford will invest $1.1 billion in the Kansas City plant to expand truck production and begin producing the Transit series.

According to the automaker, fullsize truck sales are up 19 percent through April of 2013, leading to an additional 900 workers and a third shift of production for the F-150. Production of the Transit series will begin in the fourth quarter of this year, requiring an additional 1,100 workers. In addition, Ford estimates that a total of 18,000 jobs will be created by suppliers to its Kansas City plant to support the additional vehicle production.

Is Your City Ready for Electric Vehicles?

Be prepared: It’s the motto of the Boy Scouts, but it seems fairly apropos for metropolitan areas when it comes to accommodating the volume of new electric vehicles on the horizon. And that is exactly why Ford is working with cities around the country to identify ways to prepare for the plug-in vehicles, such as the Focus Electric later this year.

“As more and more electric vehicles come to market, it’s incredibly important that cities develop action plans, including infrastructure development and permitting solutions, to ensure these vehicles are a viable solution for citizens,” said Mike Tinskey, the Ford Manager of Vehicle Electrification and Infrastructure.

While the existing electric grid has plenty of capacity to support electric vehicles, the key for local utilities will be to offer incentives so customers will charge at night or off-peak times to minimize demand on the grid. There also will need to be an urban planning approach to optimize public/commercial electric vehicle charge locations, meaning they would be used often and be an efficient use of investment dollars. Ford has been encouraged by specialized approaches some cities are taking to support electric vehicles. For example, Boston, New York City and Philadelphia are looking into opportunities to promote travel between the cities by electric vehicle. Additionally, each city is hiring an electric vehicle policy coordinator to help improve efficiency of the permitting processes.

First Look at the 2013 Ford Taurus and Taurus SHO

It’s difficult to pick the most noteworthy feature of the 2013 Ford Taurus, but let’s start with how the flagship sedan manages to make a bit of automotive history: It is the first car in the Ford North America lineup to offer the new 2.0-liter EcoBoost™ engine. Beyond that, the new Taurus also touts improved fuel economy, more smart technology, a fresh look and additional safety features. And did we mention the Taurus SHO is the sportiest model yet to wear the performance badge? But more on that one in a minute.

The 2.0-liter EcoBoost combines a turbocharger with gasoline direct injection, and is expected to deliver best-in-class highway fuel economy of at least 31 mpg, as well as an estimated 237 horsepower and 250 lb.-ft. of torque. Meanwhile, the standard 3.5-liter V6 is projected to deliver unsurpassed fuel efficiency among V6 segment competitors while still delivering increased performance, with an anticipated 290 horsepower. Both engines are mated to unique six-speed automatic transmissions that offer optimized gear selection for off-the-line power delivery in lower gears, while benefiting fuel economy with higher gears that keep the engine turning efficiently at lower revolutions while cruising.

Ford Edge is a Top Safety Pick

Raise your hand if you were a kid whose parents let you ride in the very back of the family station wagon on road trips, rolling from side to side during left and right turns. Anyone? All of us? It would have been difficult to imagine back then that there would come a day in which we would be driving vehicles so advanced in safety technology, our days as human cargo would become merely an eye-rolling memory. Times have sure changed – now, driver and occupant safety are a priority for buyers when considering a vehicle purchase.

Those are a priority for Ford too, from bumper to bumper. Ford now has 10 vehicles on the road in the U.S. that have earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick rating. Among them is the 2011 Edge (for models built after February 2011).

2012 Ford Focus scores government rating of 40 mpg!

The 2012 Ford Focus received a government rating of achieving 40 miles per gallon on the highway, as the automaker's global launch of the compact spurs jobs among its supplier base, company officials said Friday.

The Environmental Protection Agency also certified the Focus as getting 28 mpg in city driving, Ford said. The rating applies to a model with a four-cylinder direct-injection engine and six-speed automatic transmission, as well as other fuel saving features.

The fuel economy news came as the Dearborn automaker announced its supplier network has expanded to meet the demand of its C-segment platform, which underpins the new Focus. Many of Ford's 310 global suppliers are adding jobs, facilities and equipment to build parts for the new Focus. Among the major Focus suppliers, 5,500 jobs have been added at facilities in North America, Europe and Asia, the automaker said.
"Suppliers are critical to the success of the new Focus, and they are stepping up to support Ford in this important launch," said Tony Brown, group vice president of Ford global purchasing.
The Focus becomes Ford's fourth vehicle with an EPA-certified rating of 40 mpg or more.

All-New Ford Explorer Wins 2011 North American Truck of the Year

January 10th, 2011

The competition may have been stiff, but Ford has done it again, capturing its seventh win of the North American Truck of the Year title, this time with the all-new 2011 Ford Explorer. With class-leading fuel economy, a towing capability of 5,000 pounds, available industry-exclusive second-row inflatable safety belts and Intelligent 4WD with an advanced Terrain Management System, as well as a host of other advanced technologies and features, the new Ford Explorer walked away with the prestigious title of 2011 North American Truck of the Year.

The North American Truck of the Year award recognizes vehicles based on factors that include innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar. A jury of 49 veteran automotive journalists from the United States and Canada vote for the vehicles, which must be “all-new” or “substantially changed” from the previous model to qualify for the award. Last year, the Ford Transit Connect was the winner. The best-selling Ford F-150 pickup won the honor in 2004 and 2009; the fuel-efficient Ford Escape Hybrid won in 2005. This is the 18th year for the Truck of the Year award.

“It’s a proud moment for Ford, our employees and our customers to have Explorer named North American Truck of the Year,” said Mark Fields, Ford president of The Americas. “Winning this honor for the third consecutive year confirms our One Ford plan is working to deliver vehicles people truly want and value, with industry-leading quality, fuel efficiency, safety and smart technology.”

Ford Focus Electric Car

Ford, using the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas as a stage – instead of the upcoming big auto show in Detroit – has formally introduced the Ford Electric, its first all-electric passenger car. The company said the car, to be manufactured for North American sales at its plant in Wayne, Mich., will launch by late this year.

Ford gains ground in customer perception

The Ford brand gained ground in consumers' minds this year as Toyota slipped, though the Japanese juggernaut still leads the pack by a slight margin.

Over the last two years, Ford climbed 35 percentage points while Toyota dropped 46 percentage points, according to the latest survey from Consumer Reports.

During this time, Ford (144) moved within three points of Toyota (147). A year ago, Toyota held a significant lead in the rankings, 196 to 140.5.

Toyota lost ground in the wake of its massive safety recalls, which have dented its image considerably. Meanwhile, high marks for the Fusion hybrid and 2011 Explorer helped Ford close the gap.

The scores in the survey reflect how customers perceive each brand in seven categories: safety, quality, value, performance, design/style, technology/innovation and environmentally friendly/green capability.

Interestingly, while Toyota still leads in brand perception, Ford pulled ahead in the categories that resonate with consumers: safety, quality and value.

Toyota remained strong in environmental friendliness, a category that continues to become less important to consumers. The Consumer Reports survey indicates that 28 percent of consumers now find it to be an important factor when purchasing a car.

The most important factors, according to the study, are safety (65 percent), quality (57 percent) and value (51 percent).

Ford to Tear Down EcoBoost V-6 "Torture Test" Engine at Detroit Auto Show

Want a chance to see the very same EcoBoost V-6 engine that Ford engineers have torture tested over the past several months? You can — in pieces — if you attend the first public day of the 2011 North American International Auto Show in Detroit at 11 a.m. on Jan. 15.

Ford engineers will disassemble and examine the twin-turbo direct-injection six-cylinder gas engine for long-term durability performance in the Ford powertrain display at Cobo Hall.

The 365-horsepower, 420 pounds-feet of torque EcoBoost V-6 is one of three all-new engines available for the 2011 Ford F-150. It racked up the equivalent of more than 160,000 miles and 10 years of rugged use after it was “shock” tested on a dyno, dragged thousands of pounds of logs up steep grades, towed a pair of Ford Fusion racecars at full throttle around a 1.5-mile oval NASCAR track for 24 hours and raced in the 1,061-mile Baja 1000.

Why do all that? Ford wants to prove to full-size truck buyers that a six-cylinder turbo can perform with the same reliability, durability and performance as a V-8, but with up to 20 percent expected better fuel economy.

"Customers will be able to see for themselves how the components fared during a regime of tests that, when taken together, are far more extreme than even the harshest-use customer could dish out," said Jim Mazuchowski, V-6 engines programs manager. "This EcoBoost truck engine received no special treatment, and now we’re going to see how it did."

If you go, take a camera. We want to see pictures!

2012 Ford Focus Gets Advanced Stability System

DEARBORN, Michigan — Ford has announced that it will include a "torque vectoring" vectoring feature in the standard stability control system on the redesigned 2012 Focus, which goes on sale in the first quarter of 2011. The automaker is marketing the feature as a performance tool for enthusiast-minded 2012 Ford Focus buyers.

Ford says the torque vectoring feature improves vehicle control during cornering by applying braking force to an individual drive wheel (in this case, one of the front wheels). The amount of braking will be "imperceptible" to the driver, Ford says. The system is meant to imitate the effect of a limited-slip differential.

This is the first use of this technology in a Ford vehicle on the North American market, and it will be standard on all 2012 Ford Focus models.

Ford returns to minivans with compact C-Max

Ford is getting back into the minivan game with a seven-passenger vehicle called C-Max and is releasing photos of the North American version for the first time today.

Ford abandoned the minivan business in the U.S. in 2006 as sales of the practical family haulers began to sink and Ford's Freestar failed to measure up to its competitors.

Now, Ford is betting that millennials -- the generation that grew up taking family vacations in minivans during the 1980s -- are looking for a smaller, more fuel-efficient alternative to today's super-sized minivans.

"C-Max provides young families with an aspirational alternative ... one that is affordable and highly fuel efficient," said Derrick Kuzak, Ford's group vice president of global product development.
Ford's timing might be good: After years of declines, minivan sales are up 9.3% this year, about the same as 2010 industry sales.

Ford isn't saying how much the C-Max will cost, but will display it at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.

First Drive: 2011 Ford Explorer

At least a few eyebrows were raised when Ford first let on that it was bringing the Explorer back in a radically different form for 2011 – but not all of the quizzical looks were for the same reasons.

For one thing, the Explorer name had been seriously damaged because of the very public Firestone tire rollover controversy of the early 2000s, something that ostensibly made the 2011 model a prime candidate for a new name. In addition, early rumors had the Blue Oval transitioning the vehicle to a unibody chassis and away from the very body-on-frame architecture that helped establish it as the archetypal sport utility vehicle for two decades. It simply wasn't clear that a crossover-based vehicle would still be able to make an authentic claim to the same core values that helped the previous four iterations of Explorer sell millions of copies. Finally, Ford already had a very competent three-row CUV in its arsenal – the Flex. Were its dealers really looking for another one?

To drive home the Explorer's reinvention, Ford designers have wrapped the 2011 in muscular sheetmetal that makes the exit vehicle look as dated and dowdy as... well... it is. Using the D4 chassis shared with the Flex and Lincoln MKT limited Ford's designers somewhat, as the architecture's hard points dictated a high cowl and nose, and that naturally contributes to a slab-sided look. Ford has mitigated this through design tricks like prominent fender flares, deep-draw indented door panels and a clamshell hood.

Ford's now trademark grille form has been given an update with a pair of slim chrome bands between the three bars, along with wraparound wing-shaped headlamps that give the Explorer a technical, modern appearance. An aggressively raked C-pillar and blacked-out B- and D-pillars imbue the profile with a sense of forward motion and cut visual weight. Out back, the story is more conventional, with a traditional one-piece liftgate and full-width chrome garnish bookended by taillights that echo the headlamps' wing form. With a lower and significantly wider form than the outgoing Explorer, this new fifth-generation model appears more masculine than most crossovers – doubtlessly an intentional tack, as Ford will continue to market this vehicle as an SUV, not a CUV.
